PlayStation fans will have to wait a little longer for the next chapter of the God of War franchise. Santa Monica Studio has officially delayed God of War: Laufey, moving its release date from February 16, 2027, to May 20, 2027. The announcement was made on November 4, giving the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive approximately three additional months in development.

Although delays are never particularly exciting for players anticipating a major release, Santa Monica Studio says the additional time will allow the development team to finish polishing the experience and push the game toward its full potential. With Faye taking center stage in an entirely new adventure, there is plenty of anticipation surrounding what the studio is preparing.

God of War: Laufey Gets a New Release Date

Santa Monica Studio shared the news through an official statement, thanking fans for their excitement and support since the game’s reveal in June 2026.

The studio explained that it had decided to move the release to May 20, 2027, so the team could focus on the finishing touches and deliver the experience it wants players to receive.

While the announcement did not identify a specific technical issue or development problem behind the decision, the studio emphasized its commitment to making the game as strong as possible.

The delay moves the game approximately three months beyond its original February launch. It is also worth noting that Santa Monica Studio has not announced another change to the release schedule or provided a more detailed development update alongside the announcement.

For now, May 20, 2027, is the new date players should mark on their calendars.

What Is God of War: Laufey About?

Unlike the recent entries centered on Kratos and Atreus, God of War: Laufey places Faye, Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother, at the center of the story.

The game begins after Faye’s death. Rather than simply reaching the end of her journey, she awakens unexpectedly in a mysterious realm known as the Everywhen, described as the afterlife of the gods.

There, Faye discovers that the plans she established to protect her family are now in danger. Determined to find her way home and protect the people she loves, she must navigate an unfamiliar world filled with dangerous creatures, powerful gods, and unfamiliar mythologies.

The Everywhen is intended to expand the God of War universe beyond the Nine Realms. It introduces a setting where different mythological forces compete for power, giving the developers an opportunity to explore stories and environments that have not been central to the previous Norse saga.

The premise is particularly interesting because players will experience a side of the franchise that has largely remained unexplored. Faye has always been an important figure in Kratos and Atreus’s story, but her own journey has mostly existed through memories, conversations, and the consequences of her actions.

God of War: Laufey finally gives players the opportunity to understand her character through a full adventure.

Faye’s Combat Introduces a Different Direction for the Franchise

One of the most interesting aspects of God of War: Laufey is its combat system.

Rather than simply replicating Kratos’s fighting style, Santa Monica Studio is developing a combat experience built around Faye’s speed, precision, and agility.

Faye acquires a powerful sword after arriving in the Everywhen. Her abilities allow her to build momentum between attacks, use Jötnar magic, and create combinations that target enemies directly.

The developers have also introduced a new weapon called the Serpent Bow.

As detailed in a September PlayStation Blog post, the bow features two different aiming styles. Full-aim mode allows Faye to target specific enemy body parts, potentially disrupting their movements or attacks. Players can also charge and stack up to five arrows before unleashing a powerful volley.

Half-aim mode provides a more mobile approach, allowing Faye to fire clusters of arrows at nearby enemies while maintaining her movement.

The bow also supports different arrow types and customizable Serpent Scales, which can change its appearance and gameplay effects. Combined with her sword and other abilities, Faye has several ways to approach encounters.

The game also features customizable armor, blades, and Catalysts. These equipment options provide different perks and stats, allowing players to develop Faye around their preferred combat style.

This direction could help distinguish Laufey from the recent Norse games while retaining the franchise’s emphasis on intense combat and powerful abilities.

Faye Will Not Be Alone in the Everywhen

Although Faye is the central character, she will have companions accompanying her throughout the adventure.

Two characters have already been introduced: Rue and Phranque.

Rue is a collection of enchanted ribbons that serves as the guardian of Faye’s sword. She is fiercely protective of the weapon and initially has difficulty trusting others because of the responsibility placed upon her.

Phranque, meanwhile, is a cosmic cube with a strong connection to the Everywhen. He is determined to protect his home and the creatures living within it as conflict spreads throughout the afterlife.

These companions appear to play an important role in Faye’s journey, giving the game additional personalities beyond its central protagonist.

The announced cast includes Deborah Ann Woll reprising her role as Faye, Jack Quaid as Phranque, and Perlina Lau as Rue.

Their involvement gives players an early look at the personalities accompanying Faye and the relationships that may develop throughout the story.

What Does the Delay Mean for PlayStation’s 2027 Lineup?

The delay is significant because God of War: Laufey is one of PlayStation’s major upcoming first-party releases.

Originally scheduled for February 2027, the game will now arrive in the second half of May. This gives Santa Monica Studio additional development time, but it also changes the timing of one of Sony’s anticipated releases for the first half of the year.

For players, the biggest immediate consequence is a longer wait. Those who were planning to experience Faye’s story early next year will need to adjust their expectations.

However, the delay also creates more time for the developers to refine the game’s combat, performance, environments, and overall experience. Santa Monica Studio has not provided specific details about what remains unfinished, so it would be premature to assume that the game is experiencing major development difficulties.

There is also the question of how the new release date fits into PlayStation’s broader 2027 schedule. With the game now arriving in May, Sony has more flexibility to organize its first-party releases throughout the year.

That said, the company has not announced any specific scheduling changes to its other upcoming games because of this delay.

God of War: Laufey Pre-Orders and Editions

Despite the release date change, the game remains available for pre-order.

According to PlayStation’s official store listing, the Standard Edition is priced at $69.99, while the Digital Deluxe Edition costs $79.99.

The Digital Deluxe Edition includes the game, a digital mini artbook, the official soundtrack, a Dark Alchemy equipment set, and an in-game resource pack.

Players who pre-order any edition also receive the Last Wish Armor Set, Phranque’s Golden Leaves Appearance, and an in-game resource pack.

The game is currently listed for PlayStation 5.

Final Thoughts

God of War: Laufey’s delay is disappointing for fans who were looking forward to playing it in February, but an additional three months of development could be worthwhile if it helps Santa Monica Studio deliver a more polished experience.

There is already plenty to be excited about. Faye’s journey through the Everywhen offers an opportunity to explore an important character in the God of War universe, while the new combat mechanics and companions give the game its own identity.

The biggest question now is what Santa Monica Studio will reveal next. With the new release date set for May 20, 2027, fans will likely be watching for additional gameplay footage, story details, and more information about Faye’s abilities as development continues.

For now, players will have to wait a little longer before stepping into the Everywhen.
