CD Projekt Red’s dystopian RPG is heading toward the big screen, but questions remain about the story, cast, and release date.

The neon lights of Night City may soon be shining on the big screen. A live action film set in the universe of Cyberpunk 2077 is in development at Paramount Pictures, marking another major step for CD Projekt Red’s popular science fiction franchise beyond video games.

The news emerged on October 8, 2026, through a report from Deadline. Veteran Hollywood producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to the project alongside CD Projekt Red, the Polish studio behind Cyberpunk 2077. Although the announcement has generated excitement among fans, the film remains in its early development stages, meaning many of its biggest details are still unknown.

Paramount Pictures Is Bringing Night City to Live Action

Cyberpunk 2077 takes place in Night City, a sprawling metropolis shaped by powerful corporations, advanced technology, cybernetic enhancements, and a society where wealth and power determine who gets ahead. Its combination of open world exploration, character driven storytelling, and dystopian themes has helped establish it as one of the most recognizable modern RPGs.

Now, Paramount Pictures is developing a live action film set in that universe. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, whose producing credits include the Transformers and G.I. Joe film franchises, is attached to the project alongside CD Projekt Red.

CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski also acknowledged the partnership publicly, expressing excitement about working with Paramount as a partner that shares the studio’s creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise. He added that more details would be shared when the time is right.

For fans, this is an opportunity to see the franchise’s distinctive world interpreted through live action rather than the stylized visuals of the games or animation.

Will the Movie Follow V and Johnny Silverhand?

One of the biggest questions is whether the film will adapt the story of Cyberpunk 2077 or introduce an entirely new cast of characters.

The game follows V, a mercenary whose life changes after a dangerous job leaves them sharing their mind with the digital consciousness of Johnny Silverhand, portrayed by Keanu Reeves. Their struggle to survive becomes intertwined with Night City’s corporate conflicts, questions of identity, and the consequences of technological power.

A direct adaptation could bring familiar characters and storylines to the screen. However, the franchise has already demonstrated that Night City can support stories beyond the main game’s narrative.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the Netflix anime produced in collaboration with Studio Trigger, followed a different group of characters while exploring the same brutal world. Its approach showed that the setting does not need to rely exclusively on V and Johnny Silverhand to tell compelling stories.

For now, Paramount has not confirmed whether the film will adapt the game’s plot or tell a new story in the Cyberpunk universe. No cast, director, screenwriter, or release date has been announced.

Cyberpunk’s Success Beyond Video Games

The announcement arrives after Cyberpunk 2077 established itself as a major commercial success despite its difficult launch in 2020.

According to Reuters, the game had sold more than 40 million copies worldwide by July 2026, while its Phantom Liberty expansion had sold 15 million copies. Those figures illustrate the franchise’s ability to maintain a substantial audience years after its original release.

The franchise has also expanded through animation and other media. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners helped introduce Night City to audiences who might not have played the game, demonstrating the potential for adaptations to bring new fans into the wider universe.

Another animated project is already on the horizon. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on October 20, 2026, with a new cast and a standalone story centered on revenge and redemption.

The upcoming live action movie could continue that expansion, giving the franchise another way to explore its themes of corporate control, technological advancement, and the human cost of chasing power.

What About the Release Date and Cast?

For anyone hoping to see the movie soon, patience will be necessary.

Paramount has not announced a release date or production schedule. There is also no confirmed information about the director, screenwriter, casting, or the specific storyline.

Fans should therefore be cautious about rumors involving Keanu Reeves returning as Johnny Silverhand or other familiar characters appearing in the film. Until the production team confirms those details, no returning cast members or story connections should be treated as official.

There is also an earlier piece of franchise news worth watching. In October 2023, CD Projekt Red announced a separate collaboration with Anonymous Content to develop a live action project set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. The studio has not publicly clarified whether that earlier project is connected to Paramount’s newly reported film.

That distinction is important because the newly reported Paramount production should not automatically be assumed to replace or continue the earlier project.

What This Could Mean for the Future of Cyberpunk

A live action adaptation offers an opportunity to bring the atmosphere of Night City to a new audience, but it also presents a significant creative challenge.

Cyberpunk 2077 is more than its futuristic weapons, neon signs, and cybernetic characters. Its strongest stories explore inequality, corporate exploitation, identity, and the difficult choices people make when the systems around them seem impossible to escape.

A successful adaptation will need to preserve those themes while making the world accessible to viewers who have never played the game.

The production will also have to decide how to handle the franchise’s visual identity. Night City’s dense architecture, holographic advertisements, futuristic vehicles, and extensive cyberware are central to its atmosphere. Translating those elements into convincing live action could be one of the film’s biggest production challenges.

At the same time, the freedom to tell a new story could be an advantage. Rather than trying to condense the entire RPG into a single movie, the filmmakers could focus on one character, one neighborhood, or one conflict that reveals a different side of Night City.

That approach worked for Edgerunners, and it could offer a promising direction for the live action project as well.

Final Thoughts

The Cyberpunk 2077 live action movie is an exciting development for CD Projekt Red’s growing multimedia franchise. Paramount Pictures has a project in development, Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached as a producer, and CD Projekt Red has expressed enthusiasm about the partnership.

However, the film is still in its early stages. There is no confirmed release date, cast, director, or plot, and fans will have to wait for additional announcements before knowing exactly what Paramount has planned.

Whether the movie follows V and Johnny Silverhand or introduces an entirely new cast, it has the potential to explore one of gaming’s most distinctive science fiction settings in a different medium.

For now, Night City is preparing for another potential expansion beyond gaming, and the most interesting details are still waiting to be revealed.
