PlayStation’s September 3 State of Play delivered one of the company’s biggest showcases of 2026, featuring major updates, new game reveals, release dates, expansions, and a second Japan-focused presentation packed with announcements.

Rather than focusing on a single blockbuster reveal, Sony used the showcase to provide updates across a huge portion of its upcoming lineup. From Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei to Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, and the surprise announcement of Maneater 2, there was something for almost every type of PlayStation player.

The September 3 presentation was also unusual because Sony followed the main State of Play with a separate State of Play Japan, hosted by Yuki Kaji and focused on games from Japanese and Asian developers. Altogether, the two presentations featured more than 30 games.

Here’s everything you need to know about the latest PlayStation showcase.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation Finally Gets a Release Date

The biggest announcement of the showcase came at the very end.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation received an extensive gameplay presentation and a confirmed release date:

April 8, 2027

The game will launch on PlayStation 5, bringing Square Enix’s modern Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy toward its conclusion. The new footage showcased a much larger world than the previous entries.

Players will be able to explore areas from the air aboard the Highwind, travel through towns and wilderness, ride Chocobos, and use grapple guns to navigate the environment.

The trailer also provided another look at the game’s combat system and its expanded FITS system, which allows characters to combine their abilities and create powerful synergies.

After Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Revelation is shaping up to be the culmination of one of Square Enix’s most ambitious projects.

For longtime Final Fantasy VII fans, this was easily the most important announcement of the entire showcase.

Marvel’s Wolverine Gets Its Launch Trailer

Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine received a new launch trailer ahead of its release.

The trailer provides a deeper look at Logan, his allies, and the threats he’ll encounter throughout the game. Characters including Jean Grey, Sabretooth, Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike, Mystique, and Bolivar Trask all make appearances.

The timing is particularly significant because the game is almost here.

Marvel’s Wolverine launches September 15, 2026.

That puts it just days away from the September 3 presentation.

After the success of Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Wolverine represents Insomniac’s first major step into another Marvel hero’s standalone adventure.

Ghost of Yōtei Adds Most Wanted Mode

Sucker Punch also returned with a major update for Ghost of Yōtei.

The new Most Wanted mode is a combat-survival experience that challenges players to fight through waves of enemies and increasingly difficult boss encounters. The mode introduces additional weapons, cosmetics, and playable characters that can be unlocked through gameplay.

Even more exciting for Ghost of Tsushima fans, Jin Sakai returns as a playable character.

Most Wanted will launch on October 1 as part of the game’s Complete Edition. The Complete Edition also includes Echoes of Sekigahara, an expansion focusing on Atsu’s past and her experiences during the Battle of Sekigahara.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance Revealed

Capcom brought one of its biggest upcoming expansions to the show. Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance received its first major trailer, showing new locations, monsters, gameplay mechanics, and story content.

The expansion takes place after the events of the base game and continues the story of the Expedition Team in the Forbidden Lands.

One of the biggest additions is the new Skybound Eyrie region. The expansion also introduces new Elder Dragons, including the newly revealed Gundoraja, alongside other monsters and challenges.

Capcom also revealed a new Boost Action designed to expand the hunting experience.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance launches in 2027.

Players will also get an opportunity to try the expansion at Tokyo Game Show 2026, where a demo featuring a hunt against the new monster Arakeeta will be playable.

Metro 2039 Gets a Release Date

4A Games showed the first PS5 Pro gameplay for Metro 2039.

The upcoming survival shooter follows a mysterious protagonist known as Stranger as he travels through post-apocalyptic Moscow.

The game combines:

• Exploration
• Survival
• Stealth
• First-person combat
• Story-driven gameplay

The latest footage highlighted the game’s atmospheric environments and dangerous encounters.

Metro 2039 launches February 4, 2027.

It could be one of the biggest first-person survival releases of early 2027.

Maneater 2 Announced

One of the show’s biggest surprises was Maneater 2.

The sequel takes the shark RPG formula and moves it into a bizarre new setting: an ultra-luxury private island theme park.

Players once again control a dangerous shark, but this time they’ll have an enormous tourist attraction to explore — and plenty of humans to eat.

The game is scheduled to launch on PS5 in 2027.

The announcement was a particularly fun surprise because the original Maneater developed a cult following thanks to its ridiculous premise and open-world shark gameplay.

Until Dawn 2 Gets a Release Date

Firesprite officially revealed that Until Dawn 2 will launch on:

January 28, 2027

The new horror adventure follows the Dead True crew as they investigate supernatural mysteries.

The story takes players back to Blackwood Sanatorium before moving to Akishima Island, where players will once again have to make decisions that can dramatically affect the story.

The game is being developed through a collaboration between Firesprite and AdHoc Studio, the team behind Dispatch.

Pre-orders open September 10.

Final Fantasy Resonance Gets a Demo and Sephiroth

Final Fantasy Resonance also received an important update.

The upcoming HD-2D action RPG now has a demo available on the PlayStation Store. The demo includes the game’s entire first chapter, and save data can carry over to the full release. But Square Enix had another surprise.

Sephiroth is in the game.

Players will eventually be able to encounter and challenge the legendary One-Winged Angel, with a special reward available for those who defeat him.

Final Fantasy Resonance launches October 22, 2026.

GTA VI Gets Limited-Edition DualSense Controllers

Sony and Rockstar also revealed two new Grand Theft Auto VI-themed DualSense controllers.

The controllers come in:

• Black
• White

Both designs are inspired by the aesthetic of Vice City.

The limited-edition controllers launch November 19, the same day that GTA VI launches on PS5. Pre-orders begin September 10.

The controllers will likely become highly sought-after collector’s items, particularly given the enormous anticipation surrounding GTA VI.

Rhapsody in Scarlet Revealed

Konami introduced a brand-new action-adventure game called Rhapsody in Scarlet.

The game combines:

• 1920s New York
• Jazz
• Magic
• Supernatural creatures
• Stylish action combat

Players control Ellie Myers, a Magus who becomes involved in a mystery surrounding a shadowy mafia organization. The combat system focuses on customizable combinations of magic and beast abilities. A separate story trailer was also shown during State of Play Japan.

There is currently no announced release date.

Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown

Pearl Abyss revealed Charting the Unknown, a major expansion for Crimson Desert.

The expansion will add more content to the already enormous action-adventure experience. The trailer was captured on PS5 Pro and showcased new gameplay involving Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane.

Charting the Unknown launches October 15.

The expansion gives players another reason to return to the world of Pywel while continuing the characters’ journeys.

New Game: CONQ: Crown of No Quarter

The showcase also introduced CONQ: Crown of No Quarter.

The game is a shared open-world warfare experience where players can:

• Command armies
• Fight across land and sea
• Storm enemy fortresses
• Construct siege weapons
• Battle opposing factions

The large-scale warfare focus makes CONQ one of the more interesting new multiplayer announcements from the showcase.

Daba: Land of Water Scar

Another PlayStation China Hero Project title appeared during the show.

Daba: Land of Water Scar follows a clayman traveling across a mysterious world where the waters have disappeared. The game’s unusual art direction immediately helped it stand out from the other announcements.

Daba arrives on PS5 in Spring 2027.

Gundam Rogue Orbit

Gundam Rogue Orbit received a new trailer and a release date. The game focuses on fast-paced Gundam combat with extensive customization. Players can customize their mobile suits using different parts, weapon types, Tactical Skills, colors, and MOD Skins.

Gundam Rogue Orbit launches March 5, 2027.

The RX-78-2 Gundam can also be recreated through customization options.

Hunter’s Moon Brings Folk Horror to PS5

Hunter’s Moon is a first-person historical folk-horror game set in 17th-century England. Players control a woman accused of witchcraft who must escape from a village while avoiding witch hunters. The game emphasizes stealth, exploration, and survival rather than traditional action.

Hunter’s Moon launches October 25 on PS5.

The game’s setting is inspired by the real history of English witch hunts, giving it a particularly grounded approach to supernatural horror.

Uncanyon Announced for 2027

Uncanyon comes from Graceful Decay, the team behind Maquette. The puzzle-focused adventure revolves around manipulating perspectives, memories, and parallel realities.

Players can blend different realities together to create new environments and solve puzzles.

Uncanyon launches in 2027 on PS5.

Saros Gets Its Zenith Update

Housemarque’s Saros is receiving a major free update later this year.

The Zenith update adds:

Overlord Rush

A boss-rush mode where players fight bosses from the campaign consecutively while competing for high scores.

Eclipse Layers

A New Game Plus mode with new modifiers, progression options, and additional secrets. The update will also introduce new accessibility options, including the ability to slow the game’s speed.

The update will be free for existing Saros players.

SlashZero Demo Available Now

SlashZero, a side-scrolling action roguelike, received a new trailer and a playable demo.

The temporary demo includes:

• Three playable characters
• Boss battles
• More than 10 hours of content

The full game is scheduled for Spring 2027.

Stupid Never Dies Demo

Another surprise was Stupid Never Dies, a zombie action game that received a demo during the showcase. The demo covers the opening portion of the game, with save data carrying over to the full release.

The game launches October 21.

One of its most unusual mechanics allows players to steal abilities from powerful monsters and use them to grow stronger.

Where the Seeds Fall

Cygames introduced its new experimental label CygamesEdge alongside its debut project, Where the Seeds Fall.

The action-adventure follows a soldier and a mysterious Fell Child as they descend the World Tree toward a surface devastated by the Blight.

Where the Seeds Fall launches November 5, 2026 on PS5.

World Phasebound Control Authority: WPCA

The showcase also introduced World Phasebound Control Authority: WPCA, an action RPG set in Seoul.

Players take on the role of a Containment Agent who enters dangerous containment zones to investigate supernatural phenomena.

The game is scheduled for 2028 on PS5.

PlayStation Plus Gets Classic Games

Sony also announced several additions for PlayStation Plus.

Mycopunk, a cooperative looter shooter for up to four players, is coming to the Game Catalog later this year. The game has players controlling customizable robots fighting fungus-infected enemies and building new weapons.

The Premium Classics catalog will also receive:

• Mega Man X: Command Mission — September
• Dino Crisis 2 — later this year
• Ratchet & Clank — later this year

For fans of PlayStation’s older library, the addition of Dino Crisis 2 is particularly notable.

The Resident Evil Movie Opens the Showcase

The presentation opened with an exclusive clip from Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie.

The film is a new story set during a viral outbreak in Raccoon City.

The protagonist, Bryan, is a medical courier who becomes caught up in the outbreak after attempting to make a delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital.

Resident Evil arrives in theaters September 18.

While it isn’t a game announcement, beginning a PlayStation showcase with the upcoming Resident Evil film was an unusual way to set the tone for the presentation.

The State of Play Japan Brings Even More Games

The September 3 event wasn’t actually one presentation.

After the main State of Play ended, Sony immediately followed it with State of Play Japan, focusing on games from Japan and other parts of Asia.

This second presentation added even more announcements and deeper dives.

Among the highlights were:

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3

The long-awaited sequel is coming to PS5 in 2027.

Players can create their own hero, develop a personalized fighting style, and battle powerful opponents.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World

The latest trailer showed more of the alternate world explored by the game’s young Monster Wranglers.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World launches December 3 on PS5.

Fate/Extra Record

The remake of Fate/Extra now has a confirmed release date:

January 28, 2027

It will launch on both PS5 and PS4.

The remake expands the Moon Holy Grail War and introduces an updated deck-building Command Card combat system.

Digimon Story Time Stranger: A Hero’s Eternal Legacy

This expansion is coming in 2027.

Set three years after the main game, it introduces a new protagonist, a new partner, and approximately 50 new Digimon.

Rev. Noir

Konami showed new gameplay from the RPG and confirmed a 2027 release.

The game follows Asch and Finé as they attempt to stop the catastrophic phenomenon known as Lightfall.

The Eminence in Shadow: Phantom Echoes

The series’ first console game is coming to PS5 in 2027.

The game features roguelite action centered around the Seven Shadows and an original story supervised by series creator Daisuke Aizawa.

Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad

The first DLC expansion, Genesis Maidens, is coming this winter. It adds a new story set during the early floors of Aincrad, with Mito joining the fight.

Was This a Good State of Play?

Overall, yes – but its strength was breadth rather than one massive surprise.

The September 3 showcase demonstrated that PlayStation has a substantial pipeline extending through the rest of 2026 and well into 2027.

There was something for almost every genre:

• Horror
• RPGs
• Action games
• Racing
• Survival
• Multiplayer
• Anime adaptations
• Puzzle games
• Open-world adventures
• Classic games
• Expansions and DLC

And Sony didn’t rely exclusively on first-party games.

The presentation featured major third-party partnerships with Square Enix, Capcom, Konami, Bandai Namco, Pearl Abyss, and others. The result was a showcase that felt more like a snapshot of the PlayStation ecosystem than a single-company presentation.

Final Thoughts

The September 3, 2026 PlayStation State of Play was an enormous showcase, especially when the main presentation and State of Play Japan are considered together.

The biggest announcement was undoubtedly Final Fantasy VII Revelation, with Square Enix finally confirming its April 8, 2027 release date and showing an extensive look at the game’s expanded world and combat.

But there was much more to the show.

Marvel’s Wolverine is almost here, Until Dawn 2 now has a January release date, Metro 2039 is heading to PS5 in February, and Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is expanding Capcom’s latest hunting adventure in 2027.

Meanwhile, Ghost of Yōtei’s Most Wanted mode brings Jin Sakai back, Gran Turismo 7 is receiving a substantial Spec IV update, and Sony is even celebrating the PlayStation brand itself with a LEGO replica of the original console.

The second State of Play Japan presentation made the event even more impressive, with Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3, Fate/Extra Record, Gundam Rogue Orbit, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, Digimon Story Time Stranger, and several other Japanese-developed projects.

If anything, the biggest challenge with the September showcase was simply how much information Sony packed into it. There may not have been a single announcement that completely overshadowed everything else, but the sheer number of games shown demonstrates that the PS5’s upcoming lineup remains incredibly diverse.

For PlayStation players, the next several months are going to be busy. And judging from this showcase, 2027 could be even busier.
