Gamescom 2026 has officially kicked off, and this year’s Opening Night Live delivered a packed showcase of new games, major updates, surprise reveals, and long-awaited footage. Hosted by Geoff Keighley alongside Eefje “Sjokz” Depoortere, the two-hour presentation featured more than 70 games across the main show and pre-show.

With major franchises including The Witcher, Final Fantasy, Gears of War, Metro, Silent Hill, Rainbow Six, and Dungeons & Dragons making appearances, Gamescom has once again provided plenty for gamers to talk about heading into the rest of 2026 and 2027.

Here are some of the biggest announcements from the latest Gamescom showcase.

One of the biggest surprises of Opening Night Live was the return of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

CD Projekt Red announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered, which will be released on September 29, 2026 as a free upgrade for existing owners. The remaster includes visual and performance improvements alongside updates to several gameplay systems. It will be available across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

But CD Projekt Red wasn’t finished.

The studio also revealed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: Songs of the Past, a brand-new story expansion scheduled for 2027.

The expansion will bring Geralt back for another adventure with new quests, characters, monsters, and locations. It is being developed in collaboration with Fool’s Theory. For fans who thought Geralt’s story had finally ended, this was easily one of the biggest surprises of the show.

Square Enix also brought Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the final installment in its modern Final Fantasy VII trilogy, to the showcase.

The new trailer provided a deeper look at the game’s story and showed off several major elements that fans have been waiting to see.

The Highwind and underwater sequences were among the notable reveals, while several of the franchise’s famous Weapons, including Ruby Weapon, Emerald Weapon, and Ultima Weapon, also appeared. The entire party is now coming together for the trilogy’s conclusion, including Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind.

Square Enix is targeting a spring 2027 release.

For fans who have followed the remake project since Final Fantasy VII Remake, Revelation is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated RPGs of 2027.

Xbox and The Coalition brought a new campaign trailer for Gears of War: E-Day.

The prequel takes players back to Emergence Day, showing younger versions of Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago as humanity faces the Locust for the first time. The new footage focuses heavily on the game’s story and the devastation caused by the Locust invasion.

Gears of War: E-Day launches October 6, 2026.

The game is shaping up to be an important return to the franchise’s roots, especially for longtime fans who have been waiting for a more traditional Gears experience.

Rainbow Six Goes Tactical

One of the more unexpected announcements was Rainbow Six Tactics.

Instead of continuing the franchise’s traditional first-person shooter formula, Ubisoft is turning Rainbow Six into a single-player tactical strategy game.

The game features familiar Operators but puts them into a format more reminiscent of tactical strategy games such as XCOM. Players will have to carefully position their squad, use gadgets, and take advantage of destructible environments.

Rainbow Six Tactics is scheduled for 2027.

This could be an interesting experiment for Ubisoft, particularly because Rainbow Six’s emphasis on planning and operator abilities already lends itself surprisingly well to a strategy format.

Ananta Finallt Gets a Release Date

HoYoverse also returned to the spotlight with Ananta, its ambitious open-world urban RPG. The new footage showcased a huge city filled with combat, vehicles, exploration, traversal mechanics, and numerous activities.

The biggest announcement was the release date.

Ananta launches globally on January 15, 2027.

The game continues to attract attention because of its combination of anime-inspired character design, open-world exploration, and mechanics that have drawn comparisons to games such as GTA and Spider-Man.

Considering HoYoverse’s history with games like Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, Ananta could become one of the more interesting free-to-play releases of early 2027.

Hoyoverse Reveals Nodus Fall

Ananta wasn’t HoYoverse’s only appearance.

The company surprised viewers with Nodus Fall, a new cooperative action game that looks dramatically different from the studio’s better-known titles.

Rather than the colorful anime aesthetic associated with Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, Nodus Fall appears to take a darker approach, with large-scale monsters, fantasy environments, and action-focused combat.

Players take on the role of Weavers, using different weapons and abilities to battle enormous creatures.

There is currently no announced release date. For HoYoverse, Nodus Fall could represent an interesting expansion into a very different genre and visual style.

Metro 2039 Shows More Gameplay

Metro 2039 received another major gameplay presentation during the showcase.

The footage showed protagonist Stranger navigating both the underground Metro and the devastated surface world.

The familiar Metro formula remains intact, with survival mechanics, improvised equipment, exploration, and atmospheric horror playing major roles.

The game is currently scheduled for February 2027. For fans of Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, and Metro Exodus, this could be one of the most significant releases of early 2027.

Warlock: Dungeons and Dragons

Dungeons & Dragons is also getting a new action-adventure game.

Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons received an extended gameplay reveal showing sword combat, magic, traversal, and environmental abilities.

The game follows Katri, who gains forbidden magical abilities through a pact with Tasha. Rather than being a traditional turn-based RPG, Warlock is designed as a third-person action-adventure, giving players a different way to experience the D&D universe.

The game is scheduled for 2027.

Other Major Games Shown

Gamescom Opening Night Live was packed with announcements beyond the headline games.

Some of the other notable appearances included:

  • Mega Man: Dual Override
  • Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake
  • Control: Resonant
  • Exodus
  • The Blood of Dawnwalker
  • Game of Thrones: War for Westeros
  • Turok: Origins
  • Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy
  • Rayman Legends Retold
  • Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2
  • Path of Exile 2
  • Crazy Taxi: World Tour
  • LEGO Skylines
  • Transport Fever 3
  • PUBG: ded.net
  • Onimusha: Way of the Sword

The pre-show alone included announcements for games such as Worms: Galactic Tactics, Humankind 2, Valor Mortis, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and others.

The Biggest Surprise: The Witcher 3 Is Not Done Yet

Perhaps the biggest story coming out of Gamescom is that CD Projekt Red isn’t ready to leave The Witcher 3 behind. The original game released more than a decade ago, yet players are now receiving both a free remaster and an entirely new story expansion.

The remaster arrives September 29, while Songs of the Past is planned for 2027. The expansion is particularly interesting because it arrives before The Witcher 4, which CD Projekt Red has now targeted for 2028.

That means fans have several more years of Witcher content to look forward to before the next mainline game arrives.

Gamescom 2026 Is Bigger Than Opening Night Live

While Opening Night Live was the headline showcase, Gamescom itself is still underway.

The 2026 event has reached a new record of more than 1,700 exhibitors, with the entire 233,000-square-meter exhibition space booked. Gamescom organizers also reported that approximately 5,000 fans watched Opening Night Live in person, with millions more watching online.

There are also additional showcases and broadcasts throughout the week, including Awesome Indies, Xbox broadcasts, developer presentations, and the Future Games Show.

So while Opening Night Live delivered many of the biggest announcements, there is still more Gamescom coverage to come.

Community Reaction

The reaction to this year’s Opening Night Live has been somewhat mixed.

There is plenty of excitement surrounding announcements such as The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Gears of War: E-Day, and Nodus Fall. The sheer number of games also means there was something for almost every type of player.

However, not everyone was impressed.

Some criticism focused on the show’s enormous number of trailers and announcements. Kotaku described the showcase as feeling poorly curated, arguing that the format made it difficult for individual games to stand out.

That criticism highlights one of the biggest challenges facing showcases like Gamescom Opening Night Live. With more than 70 titles appearing across the show and pre-show, there is an incredible amount of content, but that can also make the presentation feel overwhelming.

Still, the number of genuinely significant announcements means it would be difficult to call the showcase uneventful.

Final Thoughts

Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 delivered exactly what a major gaming showcase should: new games, major updates, surprise announcements, release dates, and plenty of reasons to look forward to the next two years of gaming.

The biggest announcement may have been the unexpected return of The Witcher 3, with both a remaster and a new expansion coming to the legendary RPG. Final Fantasy VII Revelation also gave fans a substantial look at the conclusion of Square Enix’s remake trilogy, while Gears of War: E-Day reminded Xbox fans why the franchise remains one of Microsoft’s most recognizable properties.

Meanwhile, new projects such as Nodus Fall and Rainbow Six Tactics demonstrated that major publishers are still willing to experiment with established formulas.

And Gamescom isn’t over yet.

With additional showcases, developer presentations, playable demos, and indie games still being highlighted throughout the week, there is plenty more news on the way.

For gamers, that may be the biggest takeaway from this year’s event: 2026 and 2027 are shaping up to be packed with major releases.
