An inside look at the device shaking up the gaming world, and its impact on players just like me.

Four Days, 3.5 Million Sold

Nintendo announced that the Switch 2, released on June 5, 2025, sold over 3.5 million units in its first four days, making it the fastest-selling console in the company’s history.

To put that in perspective:

  • The original Switch sold ~2.74M in its first month
  • PS5 hit ~4.5M in seven weeks
  • PS4 reached ~2.1M in under two weeks

We’re probably looking at the biggest console launch ever by a mile.

What’s Driving the Frenzy?

  • Hybrid, refined: Bigger screen (7.9″ LCD, 1080 p handheld, 4K docked), stronger hardware, longer battery.
  • Joy-Con 2: Magnetic controllers that even work as a mouse.
  • GameChat2: Voice/video chat built in; no more jumping out to Discord
  • Launch titles: Bundles with Mario Kart World (24-player races!), and Donkey Kong Bananza arriving July 17

The Launch Was Smooth. Pre-Launch? Not So Much

Pre-orders were chaotic, thanks to U.S. tariffs and scalping worries—but the launch itself went great. Stores stayed stocked, online servers stayed up, and no major glitches were reported.

Best Buy saw a quick restock at $449.99 (or $499.99 with MK World), but they went fast again.

What’s Next? Eyes on 15 Million

Nintendo aims to reach 15 million units sold by March 2026. With early momentum like this, that goal feels within reach—but they’ll need to keep up stock and roll out compelling software .

And don’t forget Nintendo has over 152 million original Switches sold so far; this is the same power behind some of its biggest franchises.

Final Take

Nintendo played it smart: an evolutionary upgrade, not a revolution—delivering better visuals, inputs, and social features without losing what made the Switch iconic. The record-setting demand proves players were ready, and Nintendo is in a great position if they can sustain momentum.

Personally, I’m already thinking about what this means for upcoming titles, accessories, and the next holiday season rush.
