Ubisoft has officially confirmed that the long-awaited remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is still in development and is now slated for release by March 2026. This announcement was made during the company’s latest earnings call, providing a more specific timeline for the game’s launch.
Delays, Doubts, and a Studio Switch-Up
The remake was first announced back in 2020, and originally set to launch in January 2021. But things went off the rails pretty quickly. The project was being handled by Ubisoft’s studios in Pune and Mumbai, and while the intent was there, the early footage didn’t exactly inspire confidence. Fan feedback was mixed (at best), and it was clear the game needed more time in the oven.
Eventually, Ubisoft pulled the remake from its release schedule entirely and handed development over to Ubisoft Montréal, aka the team behind the original 2003 classic. If anyone was going to restore this game’s legacy, it had to be them.
A New Timeline: Fiscal Year 2025–2026
Ubisoft says the remake is now targeting a launch before the end of its 2025–2026 fiscal year, which means we could see the game anytime before March 31, 2026. It’s not a precise date, but after everything this remake’s been through, just having a release window again is a win.
The company is also being more careful this time around, which means no flashy trailers, no premature hype cycles, nothing of the sort. They’re clearly aiming to get this right, especially with how well Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has been received recently. Ubisoft knows the fans are watching, and this time they want to stick the landing.
Why This Remake Still Matters
Let’s be real: The Sands of Time is more than just a nostalgia trip. It’s one of the most iconic action-platformers ever made: tight gameplay, time-rewind mechanics that were ahead of their time, and a tone that balanced humor and heroism.
A proper remake (with updated visuals, modern controls, and maybe even some expanded lore) has the potential to reintroduce the Prince to a whole new generation, and remind long-time fans why we fell in love with this game in the first place.
Stay Tuned—The Prince Returns Soon
While 2026 feels far off, I’ll take it. Ubisoft is clearly taking its time, and if that means we get a remake that actually honors the original? I’m all in.
